    in Automotive Engines

Im doing a preseason checkup on my motor. I noticed it doesn’t have a thermostat. Its a chevy 496. Is this common? If not what temp should it be? Thanks......Bob Buckway

I put a thermostat in the motor. It’s been running right at 200 degrees.

I thought the same thing with a 180.  Then watch it. I don’t know what it’s made of.

Dang, I can't imagine a big block Chevy without some form of thermostat. Is it an aluminum engine, steel, or steel with aluminum heads? My initial thoughts are to go with a 180 degree thermostat id it is an aluminum engine block, but my truck runs all day long at 210 degrees and it is steel with aluminum heads.
